There’s something oddly refreshing about being told not to go big. A recent community open call at the Hudson Valley Gallery invited artists to create tiny 2 x 2–inch artworks. That simple, playful prompt took all the pressure off. Instead of worrying about making something “important,” I found myself asking a much better question: what could I paint that small and actually enjoy making?
The Challenge of Small Art
Of course, I decided to push it a little and tested out two pieces. One was a portrait of my daughter—which turned out to be a bit too ambitious for such a tiny surface. Some subjects just need more space. The second was my sweet little black cat, Salem.

Working this small means there’s nowhere to hide. Every brushstroke matters. Rather than trying to paint every strand of Salem’s dark fur, I leaned into suggestion—playing with light and dark to hint at his shape and that silky texture cat lovers know so well.
I ended up really happy with how it turned out: Salem looks alert, present, and ready for whatever might catch his attention next.
A Community of Tiny Artists
One of my favorite parts of the show was seeing how everyone else approached the same prompt. There were tiny fish, horses, and even the Eiffel Tower. Same size, totally different ideas! It was a delightful reminder that creativity knows no bounds, even when working within constraints.

My mini masterpiece, along with many others, is still on view at the Hudson Valley Gallery through January. Go check it out at 246 Hudson St, Cornwall-On-Hudson!
The Joy of Small-Scale Art
I've enjoyed working in this small format and am using the experience to explore some other small still life studies. These should be up on my website in early 2026.
Exploring New Dimensions
Creating small art has opened my eyes to new possibilities. It’s fascinating how much emotion and detail can be packed into such a tiny canvas. Each piece tells a story, and I love the challenge of conveying that story with fewer strokes.
The Connection to My Audience
As I continue to create, I find joy in connecting with those who appreciate unique, handcrafted items. There’s something special about sharing my artistic journey with others. I hope my work resonates and inspires you to explore your own creativity.
Looking Ahead
In the coming months, I plan to dive deeper into this small-scale art exploration. I’m excited to see where this journey takes me! I believe that art should be accessible and enjoyable, regardless of size.
So, whether you're an art collector or someone who simply loves unique creations, I invite you to join me in celebrating the beauty of small art. Let’s embrace the joy it brings and the connections it fosters!
Conclusion
In conclusion, the experience at the Hudson Valley Gallery has been a delightful adventure. I encourage you to explore your own artistic endeavors, no matter how small. Remember, it’s not about the size of the canvas but the passion and creativity that go into each piece. Let’s keep creating and sharing our unique stories through art!
